The murder of ...
Private John J. Broske

Pvt John J. Broske

Private John J. Broske

On the night of August 4, 1937, two young men, Horace Bowers and Victor  Andreoli, entered the Ben-Mar Garage in the Germantown section of Philadephia. They kidnaped two of the garage attendants and stole a Oldsmobile Coach. The garage attendants, held at gun point, were driven north and after passing through Wilkes-Barre were dumped from the car. At about midnight of the same night Bowers and Andreoli drove into the small town of Portland. After leaving the car they entered into the Portland House, a local roadhouse, where they committed another robbery netting them about $100.00. Leaving with the same stolen car the pair drove into New Jersey. On the night of August 6 the pair were back in Pennsylvania and in the area of Moosic Lake, they abandoned the stolen Oldsmobile. This vehicle was recovered the following day. During the Philadelphia kidnaping and later, the Portland robbery, neither Bowers or Andreoli made any effort of disguise themself, or cover their faces. For the next seven days they camped at Lake Wallenpaupack using a rented tent. After dark on August 13, a Friday, the two returned to Wilkes-Barre, where they stole another car from the Auto Laundry. Shortly after they drove to the Boulevard Inn on East Boulevard, Bear Creek Townshiip. Private John J. Broske was investigating a murder case and was at the Boulevard Inn meeting with a witness. He was in civilian clothes standing at the bar, when Bowers, armed with a shotgun, and Andreoli a nickle plated pistol, entered, and ordered the four people in the bar to raise their arms. As Broske did so, he tried to get a better look at the gunmen behind him and Bowers discharged the .16 gauge shotgun into the officers back from a close distance. The pellets penetrated Broske’s back and kidneys and he collapsed to floor. Bowers stood over the wounded officer telling him to get up, which Broske was unable to do. Bowers then jammed the shotgun into another patrons back and took $35.00 from him, while Andreoli emptied the cash register. The gunmen fled the scene with a total take of about $75.00. Shortly after the report of the incident an ambulance and doctor arrived. Broske was immediately transported to General Hospital in Wilkes-Barre where Doctors operated in an effort to save his life. The wound was too severe and at 11:20 A.M. on August 14, 1937 he died.
