Colonel
Paul J. Evanko
In April 1995, Paul J. Evanko was appointed Commissioner of the Pennsylvania State Police and would lead the department into the new millenium.

On April 1, 1996, Evanko equipped the departments marked patrol units with video/audio recording equipment.

On May 17, 1997, Evanko realigned Area V by consolidating the interstate troop, Troop S, with and into adjacent county troop commands. This ended the troop dedicated to only interstate patrol.

Under the leadership of Evanko, on July 1, 1998, the Pennsylvania Instant Check System (PICS). was formed under the Bureau of Forensic and Criminal Identification to provide instant checks of criminal history, mental health history, certain juvenile offenses, and protection from abuse files on purchasers of firearms (handguns) and residents who request license to carry a concealed weapon.
